The oil cleanser goes first and dissolves sunscreen, makeup, and the sebum your skin produces throughout the day. The water-based cleanser follows and washes away sweat, dirt, and any residue the oil cleanser left behind.

Why One Cleanse Isn't Enough

Do You Need to Double Cleanse Every Day?

In the evening, yes, especially if you wore sunscreen or makeup. In the morning, a single gentle cleanser is usually enough since you're mostly washing away overnight oil production, not a full day's buildup.

Choosing the Right Cleansers for Your Skin

Oily and acne-prone skin often does well with a lightweight cleansing oil or balm rather than a heavy oil. Dry and sensitive skin can look for cleansing oils with soothing ingredients and follow with a low-foam, hydrating second cleanser. Whatever your skin type, the goal is to finish clean but not tight or stripped.
