Layering Skincare Products the Right Way: Thin to Thick
Share
One of the most common questions in skincare is simple but confusing: what order do these products actually go in? Korean skincare routines are built around one core rule that makes this much easier to figure out.
The Thin-to-Thick Rule
The general principle is to apply products from the thinnest, most watery texture to the thickest, richest one. Lighter formulas absorb faster and get blocked if you put a heavy cream on first, so texture, not just product category, decides the order.
A Typical Layering Order
Start with cleanser, followed by toner, then essence, then serum or ampoule, then eye cream, then moisturizer, and finish with sunscreen in the morning or a facial oil at night if you use one. Not every routine needs every step, but this is the general sequence when you do.
Where Toner and Essence Fit
Toner preps and hydrates skin right after cleansing, while essence sits between toner and serum, often described as adding an extra layer of lightweight hydration and helping active ingredients absorb better afterward.
What About Face Oils?
Facial oils are typically the last step in an evening routine, applied after moisturizer, since oil forms a seal that can block anything applied on top of it from absorbing properly.
Waiting Between Steps
You don't need to wait long between each layer, just enough time for each product to absorb, generally a minute or so, before moving to the next step. Rushing product onto still-wet skin can dilute the previous layer and reduce effectiveness.
Adjusting for Your Routine
Not everyone uses ten products, and that's fine. Whether your routine has four steps or ten, applying them from lightest to heaviest texture ensures each product actually gets a chance to do its job instead of sitting on top of something too thick to let it through.
