Sheet Masks Explained: How Often Should You Really Use Them?

Sheet masks are one of the most recognizable parts of Korean skincare, but the internet is full of conflicting advice about how often to actually use them. Daily? Weekly? Only before big events? Here's a clearer way to think about it.

What Sheet Masks Actually Do

A sheet mask is a piece of fabric or gel soaked in serum, cut to fit your face. The sheet creates an occlusive barrier that keeps the serum in close contact with your skin, allowing more of it to absorb than if you simply patted the same serum on with your hands.

So How Often Is Too Often?

For most skin types, two to three times a week is a comfortable, sustainable frequency. Using one daily won't necessarily harm your skin, but it also won't multiply the benefits β€” skin can only absorb so much, and the main risk of overdoing it is disrupting your barrier if the formula contains actives like acids or retinol.

Sensitive Skin and Sheet Masks

If your skin is reactive, start with once or twice a week and choose simple, soothing formulas with ingredients like centella asiatica, aloe, or hyaluronic acid rather than masks packed with fragrance or acids.

Timing Your Sheet Mask

Apply after cleansing and toning, before your serum and moisturizer. Leave it on for 15-20 minutes; longer than that and the sheet can start pulling moisture back out of your skin as it dries out, which works against you.

What to Do With the Leftover Essence

Don't rinse it off. Pat the remaining serum into your skin, then follow with your usual moisturizer to lock it in.

Choosing a Mask for Your Goal

Hyaluronic acid and snail mucin masks work well for hydration, niacinamide for brightening and tone, and centella asiatica for calming irritated or reactive skin. Match the mask to what your skin needs that day rather than picking randomly.

Used consistently rather than obsessively, sheet masks are a simple way to give your routine an extra hydration boost without overcomplicating things.
